Mass Planting
I mentioned yesterday that I use the dense planting method when starting seeds. Thought some of you might like to see what that looks like.
This is a standard size nursery flat of tomatoes mass planted into six-cell packs:
Separating them is easy as they’re pretty tough little critters. Just smush the soil and pull them apart, replanting into individual cells. Easy peasy. Saves a heck of a lot of potential dead space upfront.
OMG! And they don’t crowd each other out?? How big is that greenhouse and when will it be ready to start using?
BTW, I showed Hubs the pictures of the greenhouse and he’s curious about the dimensions.
Nope, they do just fine. Once they get their first true leaves, you separate them so they’d don’t actually spend too much time crowded in like that.
The greenhouse is 10′ x 16′. Steve says he’ll have it ready for plants by Thursday morning. (He’ll have to go back in to put in a window a couple of weeks down the road.) I’ll get you some dimensions (height to hip boards, center ridge, etc) in a couple of days and post them with the finished pics.
That flat of green is the most beautiful thing! I checked our starts the other day and they’re starting. That is all. I think they know it’s just too cold to do much. Got down to about 11 degrees here last night – way colder than usual for the season. I keep telling myself it won’t last forever, it won’t last forever, it won’t last forever….
This stupid winter is about to kill me. So help me, this had better be a veeeeery nice spring, summer, and fall to make up for it!
